CLEANSKY2 – ELABORAZIONE DI SEGNALI RADAR POLARIMETRICI PER LA RIVELAZIONE E CARATTERIZZAZIONE DI FENOMENI METEOROLOGICI IN RADAR AVIONICI IN BANDA X

The objective of the Cleansky2 project was to define the signal/data processing chain utilizable by an airborne polarimetric Doppler weather radar. The purpose was to clearly identify the processing steps needed to provide, in addition to an enhanced display of radar information needed for direct visualization of the basic features perturbation areas, an identification of those areas where flight may become risky, and a quantification of the risk level that is as accurate as possible. The main steps identified and implemented in the processing chain are: the motion compensation algorithm, the correction of the attenuation in rainfall, the classification of hydrometeors, the algorithm for clutter suppression and feature extraction aimed at flight risk assessment/pattern recognition in precipitation areas. The study has also evidenced the possibility to adopt, even adaptively,  1) different polarization schemes in transmission (in other terms, the two polarimetric signals coming from the IF section could be pertinent to two orthogonal polarimetric channels that are not necessarily H or V polarized); 2) different polarization transmission schemes (in other terms, not necessarily the typical sequence of transmit signal with alternate orthogonal polarization).
