Array Passive ISAR adaptive processing

The “Array Passive ISAR adaptive processing (APIS)” project has been conceived in the framework of the Defence R&T Joint Investment Programme on Innovative Concepts and Emerging Technologies (JIP-ICET) initiative promoted by the European Defence Agency (EDA). The APIS consortium was constituted by 6 entities, and 4 countries; INDRA Sistemas S.A. (INDRA) (ES), National Interuniversity Consortium for the Telecommunications (CNIT) (IT), VITROCISET SPA (VITRO) (IT), Universidad de Alcalá (UAH) (ES), MTA-SZTAKI (MTA) (HU), University of Cyprus (UCY) (CY). The project has had a total duration of 24 months. The APIS system is defined as a multichannel, multistatic single receiver for array passive radar (PR), and is capable of detecting targets and generating ISAR (Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar) images for classification purposes.

The APIS system architecture is composed by:

  • The antenna system: antenna array for the surveillance channel and Yagi for the reference channel.
  • The RF-Front-End #1 and the calibration network
  • The RF-Front-End #2 and ADCs
  • Synchronization signal generator
  • Digital Signal Processor which implements all the radar signal processing chain.
  • Passive-Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (P-ISAR) signal processing chain

The integration of multiple system capabilities, namely passive radar system concept, array antenna configuration, space adaptive processing and ISAR imaging, all implemented in a single platform, is the main important characteristic of this system.
